Uzbekistan: Imported flour and salt must be enriched with micronutrients

As of 1 April 2020, importers of flour and salt into Uzbekistan must ensure that all flour and salt are enriched with micronutrients. The amendment imposing this requirement was made to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers dated November 23, 2010 No. 260 (Decree No. 1035 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan dated December 25, 2019).

As of 1 April 2020, it will only be possible to import grade I wheat flour and table salt enriched with micronutrients into Uzbekistan.

“Micronutrients” are essential nutrients (vitamins and minerals) necessary for the normal growth and development of human body.

The reason for this requirement is prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in the population of Uzbekistan. Currently the level of micronutrient enrichment of wheat flour is 30% of the total volume of produced and imported flour of all varieties. This flour is consumed by about 56% of the population and 90% coverage is needed to prevent iron deficiency anaemia in the population.

As of 1 January 2011, all locally produced grade I wheat flour and table salt have been produced and sold only in the form that has been enriched with micronutrients.
