EAEU: Proposal to toughen food safety requirements

Draft Decision on amending Technical Regulation on Food Safety (TR TS 021/2011) has been published.

The proposed amendments to the EAEU TR on Food Safety apply to the requirements for enriched, specialized food products, including biologically active food supplements and regulate the level of content and the list of biologically active substances approved for use in the food industry. The changes also aim to prevent cases of consumer misrepresentation regarding the properties of food products and harmonization with international requirements.

In addition, safety requirements for irradiated foods are to be introduced.

In particular, the draft establishes an exhaustive list of cases when irradiation (radiation treatment) of food can be carried out. Radiation treatment of food would be possible if:

  • there is a technological need;
  • irradiated food products do not adversely affect human health;
  • radiation treatment contributes to the preservation of consumer properties of food products;
  • radiation treatment is not used as a substitute for the necessary sanitary and hygienic measures in the production or cultivation of food products.
