Uzbekistan: Adopted Technical Regulation on the Safety of Packaged Drinking Water

Starting from 12 April 2021, manufacturers and importers of packaged (bottled) drinking water in Uzbekistan are required to comply with the provisions of the adopted Technical Regulation on the Safety of Drinking Water in Uzbekistan.

The adopted TR applies to natural mineral water (table, treatment, medical-table, naturally gaseous), processed and natural drinking water as well as water intended for children.

The TR does not apply to drinking water supplied via centralised water supply network.

The TR imposes safety requirements for packaged drinking water. It sets maximum concentrations of toxic substances (in mg/dm3), such as cadmium, arsenic, mercury, lead, etc. It also sets our microbiological and radiation parameters for packaged drinking water that is sold, imported or manufactured in Uzbekistan.

Labelling and packaging requirements are set out in Chapter IV of the adopted TR.  Drinking water labels must indicate the name and source of drinking water, its composition (for some types of drinking water), storage conditions and certain additional information.

Labelling and packaging of drinking water is also subject to the relevant applicable requirements set out by Uzbekistan Technical Regulation on the Safety of Packaging and Uzbekistan Technical Regulation on Food Labelling.

Drinking water placed on the market in Uzbekistan must have a conformity certificate and bear the national mark of conformity. Drinking water manufacturers and importers are recommended to prepare products samples for testing and to obtain a conformity certificate in advance before the adopted TR enters into force on 12 April 2021.
